MANIA

"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."
Jiddu Krishnamurti
Choreography for 1 television, 2 dancers and 1 technician
Duration : 30 minutes
Company Ellipse
Creation 2020
We often hear that the world has gone mad... The idea of this creation appeared obvious to me when I heard this sentence.

I want to create a piece halfway between choreography, video installation and performance. A play inspired by the aesthetics of the theatre of the absurd, without beginning or end, without marked boundary between the stage, the public and the theatre.
When I thought about madness, several sources of inspiration came to my mind. Samuel Becket’s play Waiting Godot, which deeply impressed me, especially the relationship between the two characters ; lost, isolated who expect something but don’t know what. If the world has gone crazy, or if it’s going to get even crazier, what will it look like? My second source of inspiration was the Mad Max movie series as it is close to my personal representation of an apocalyptic world swept away by human insanity.
For the interpretation of alienated characters the film Flight over a cuckoo’s nest and the book Shutter Island are wonderful sources of inspiration. The soundscape is inspired by the musical tortures inflicted on the detainees by the army and the CIA during the Gulf War and Korean War

" The heart of the subject is not to make a dance play with crazy people, but to question the norm. Two men considered different, alienated or dangerous by society ; in the same space, white, sanitized, isolated from the external reality will learn to live together, to cohabit. We finally discover their part of humanity which contrasts with the very real madness of the outer society represented by television and the absurd technical installation encircling their space.
Are they locked up because they are dangerous or simply too different ? Are they really alienated or do we want to make them so ? Is this a way to condition them our delusional society ? "
