MADEMOISELLE

Mademoiselle
Creation 2022

Choreography for four dancers

Mademoiselle deals with the feminist struggle against sexism and gender discriminations. We want to talk about the widely held and disseminated idea that there are great innate differences between the sexes and therefore denounce the way in which these differences are instrumentalised to become sources of discrimination and hierarchy.
The title of civility, “Mademoiselle” related to 'Miss' in French, although less used on paper but still used orally, especially in street harassment, is a remarkable example of differential treatment of a person's marital status.
Mademoiselle is a project on a highly important question of society nowadays. It is a collaborative creation with the field of new technologies which includes video in live stream filmed by a dancer herself.

We use the video tool in this creation not as a simple reporting element but as an essential actor of the subject. Indeed, it will symbolize the voyeuristic look on the bodies. The image and its media treatment have always been in favour of a gendered stigmatisation and a stereotyped normalisation. We want to denounce this through our creation.
We do not want the dance to disappear behind a screen, but we think that the camera must serve the dance. The onboard camera will be carried by a dancer as an extension of her body.

The four dancers will endorse the message of the piece with a powerful dance breaking the clichés of a so-called "feminine" dance. Actresses as well as victims of all kinds of sexist situations, videographers as well as objects of fantasies, they will be the reflection of sexist discriminations and the activists of a non-sexist world.

The sets made of fake pieces of meat, created by Cobalt Fx, will be manipulated by the dancers and will be integrated into a scenography entirely thought as a metaphor of the body-object and of media stigmatization.

Collective creation

A mixed team, because sexism and gender bias concern us all.

We dream of a world in which differences (whether gender or other) are celebrated and open to a diversity of choices in our lives and desires.
A world in which a person is selected not by its gender but by its desires and skills. The deconstruction of gender stereotypes allows to build this world.

The artists in the project therefore adhere to it regardless of their gender. However, we are also aware of the weight of our social constructions, which is why, beyond the roles of each (choreography, interpretation, realization, music, dramaturgy), Mademoiselle will be collective creation.
